  • Art Raid, July 15th and 16th

The 15th and 16th of July saw us staging Art Raid, a project of Will St Leger that allows gallery visitors to steal his art. Here is Will setting up the exhibition on day 1.

The events caused a stir locally. Here you see visitors queuing up opposite the harbour here in Kinsale. Art Raid was part of the annual Kinsale Arts Week and was our main contribution to it. People began queuing about a half hour before opening time.

Normally - at least so I am told by Will - people attending an art raid will act in a typical gallery like way - respectful and keeping their distance from the art. This was different. It was the first time an actual gallery had staged an art aid and from the very start people were up for taking stuff off the walls. However - they were not allowed to. Not until the alarm sounded anyway. Take a look above for our actor-security guards.

Possibly the most outrageous act on night one was a couple passing picture through the window. the guards were slow to spot it and had to give chace.

The thieving crowd got so out of hand that we had to ring the alarm a half hour early. Here they are heading out, pictures in hand. On night too they also stole the beer!

    All gone!

It was one of those fun nights that punctured what galleries are usually about. In fact we are pleased to be a part of that but it was the crowd that was simply irressistible. They came to the gallery for the laughs. Not many galleries can boast that.
